How Ryval Works

Everything you need to know about tracking workouts, competing against yourself, and building a better training habit.

Fitness Score

Your Fitness Score is a single number (0-1000) that reflects your overall weekly training quality. It updates in real time as you work out and resets each week so you always have a fresh target to hit.

Volume

up to 250 pts

Total training load from your strength sessions — sets, reps, and weight lifted. Heavier and higher-volume workouts earn more points.

Activity

up to 200 pts

A blend of active minutes and calories burned throughout the week. Rewards both duration and workout intensity.

Consistency

up to 200 pts

How regularly you show up. Every day with at least 15 minutes of training counts toward your consistency target.

Coverage

up to 150 pts

Rewards well-rounded training. Earn points for hitting all major muscle groups, training body parts more than once, and keeping up with cardio.

Competition

up to 200 pts

Win rate from You vs You challenges. Beat your past self to earn points. If you don't use competitions, these points are redistributed across the other four components.

Beginner 0-199
Active 200-399
Fit 400-599
Strong 600-799
Elite 800+

Coverage Scoring

Coverage rewards you for training a variety of body parts rather than repeating the same muscles every session. It has three sub-components:

Group Coverage

up to 70 pts

Train as many of the 7 major muscle groups as possible each week. The more groups you hit, the more points you earn.

Double Hit

up to 50 pts

Train muscle groups on two or more separate days. Hitting a body part twice in a week shows serious commitment.

Cardio Sessions

up to 30 pts

Regular cardio sessions throughout the week. Running, cycling, rowing, or any cardio activity counts.

The 7 Muscle Groups

Chest
Back
Shoulders
Arms
Quads
Posterior Chain
Core

Arms includes both biceps and triceps. Posterior chain includes hamstrings and glutes. Full-body exercises count toward all groups.

Personalized to You

Coverage targets adjust based on your profile:

Training frequency — if you train 2 days/week, you need to hit fewer groups than someone training 5+ days.

Age — targets are slightly reduced for users over 50 to reflect realistic training volume.

Sex — female users get a slight shift toward cardio weighting in the sub-component balance.

You vs You

Compete against your own past performance. Every workout creates a ghost — a record of what you did last time — and your next session becomes a race to beat it.

1

Pick Your Opponent

Before starting, choose who to compete against: your last session, your personal best, or the average of your last 5. You can also pick any past workout.

2

See the Ghost

During your workout, a ghost line shows your opponent's heart rate alongside yours in real time. Track your calorie pace, intensity, and volume against the ghost.

3

Compete Live

Real-time comparison badges show whether you're ahead or behind. For strength workouts, it's about volume and sets. For cardio, it's calories and intensity.

4

Get Your Scorecard

After finishing, a detailed scorecard shows exactly how you compared — with percentage improvements across every metric. Wins count toward your Fitness Score.

Heart Rate Monitoring

Connect any standard Bluetooth heart rate monitor for real-time tracking during workouts. Your heart rate data powers calorie calculations, intensity scoring, and the You vs You ghost comparison.

Any BLE Monitor

Ryval works with any Bluetooth heart rate monitor that broadcasts the standard Heart Rate Service — Polar, Wahoo, Garmin, Coospo, and more. No brand lock-in.

Background Capture

Heart rate continues recording when you lock your phone or switch apps. An Android foreground service maintains the BLE connection so you never miss a beat.

Live HR Chart

A real-time heart rate chart scrolls during your workout, showing your current BPM alongside your ghost's heart rate for visual comparison.

Accurate Calories

When a heart rate monitor is connected, calories are calculated using the Keytel (2005) formula — a research-backed method that factors in your heart rate, age, sex, and weight for more accurate results than generic estimates.

Workout Tracking

Create custom workouts, log every set in real time, and track cardio sessions with distance, pace, and calories. Everything stays organized and builds toward your weekly goals.

Custom Workouts

Build workouts from a library of 200+ exercises across strength, cardio, and mixed categories. Set target sets, reps, and weights for each exercise.

Live Set Logging

One-tap set tracking: hit Start Set, perform your reps, hit End Set. Adjust reps and weight inline with +/- controls. Rest time is auto-calculated between sets.

Cardio Tracking

Log cardio activities with duration, distance, and calories. GPS tracking available for outdoor activities like running and cycling.

Progress Analytics

  • Muscle heatmap showing volume distribution and recovery
  • Body composition charts (via Health Connect)
  • Weekly trends for calories, active minutes, and workouts
  • Fitness Score history chart showing weekly progression

Privacy First

Your workout data lives on your device. We don't sell data, show ads, or upload your training history to any server.

Local Storage

Workouts, heart rate, GPS tracks, scores, and body composition data are stored in an on-device SQLite database. Nothing leaves your phone unless you choose to share or export it.

Backup & Restore

Manual and automatic backups save your entire database as a JSON file. Restore from any backup to recover your data on a new device.

Optional Social

Social features are opt-in. Sign in with a magic link to add friends, share workouts, and challenge each other. Only workout summaries are shared — never raw heart rate or GPS data.
